Year 5 Fire Brigade Visit

On the 26th of February, the Hertford Fire Brigade came into our school and went through some safety facts with us.

Station 1

Station 1 was where we had to spot all the dangers in two different scenes. Next, we discussed Stop, Drop and Roll, in which you do exactly that. Then, some of us had a go at it.

Station 2

Station 2 was where we had to place smoke alarms around a house. You must keep your smoke alarm at the top of the stairs and in your hallway (you don’t have to have it in your hall, the only place you really need it is at the top of the stairs). You also have to clean your smoke alarm with a duster every 2 weeks because dust gets into them. You should also test your smoke alarm every week.

Station 3

Station 3 was about hoax calls (don’t ever make a hoax call because other people might actually be in danger). For example you might call the fire brigade when there isn’t actually a fire and somewhere else there is a fire meaning that fire brigade have to call in fire engines from another fire station, which is further away.

At the end we watched a video showing how quickly a fire can spread. In 2 whole minutes a room was totally engulfed in flame!

We found the whole session a fantastic learning experience and now know a lot more about fire safety.
