January 2017 in Year 5

We have had busy start to the New Year, with our new English unit, based on Kensuke’s Kingdom by Michael Morpurgo. We have been developing different genres of writing including diary entries, newspaper reports and descriptive text. We have enjoyed reading this modern day Robinson Crusoe tale of adventure and planning and writing our own island adventure stories.

Linked to this English unit, we have been looking at ‘Talking Textiles’ in Art and Design and Technology. We have been looking at how stories can be portrayed through images. We have been learning about the Bayeux Tapestry and have recreated our own interpretation of a scene within our Art session. We have started to plan and sketch how we can represent each chapter of Kensuke’s Kingdom as part of our textile work.

In RE, we have been finding out about the Jewish festival of Purim and how celebrations such as these are linked to particular stories. We found out that Purim celebrates the story of Esther, who freed the Jewish people from certain death. In groups, we recreated ‘freeze frame’ scenes to tell different parts of Esther’s story. We were then ‘unfrozen’ by our class friends to share each of our characters’ thoughts at that particular moment in time.
