February 2017 in Year 5/6

February has flown by in Year 5/6. We have been quite active in many of our lessons, perfecting our skills at reciting poetry (and writing some of our own). Our focus poet was Charles Causley and we considered several of his poems written for children. We created our own success criteria to help us improve our recital technique.

Our focus in maths has been the properties of shape. We have been drawing shapes precisely, improving our skills at measuring and drawing angles accurately.

In science we have completed our unit of work on Healthy Living. Having looked at the human circulatory system, we then explored how activities such as smoking, drugs and alcohol can affect our health.

The Year 5s completed their Playleading training and have been practising on Year 2. The Year 6s went to a Crucial Crew event where their awareness of a variety of safety issues was raised.

In PE we have been learning how to play tag rugby and have continued to refine our dance skills. In RE we used drama to explore the story of Esther, learning how key religious festivals are often related to key figures, events and stories. In our PSHE lessons we have been learning about human rights and thinking about our own personal goals, with the help of our new Jigsaw friends, Jez and Jem.
