October 2021 in Year 3

This month, Year 3 have been enjoying the unexpected October sunshine! In the classroom, the children have produced excellent work and enjoyed learning a variety of new skills.
In English, we have been learning about the key features of a newspaper report. The features we have learnt about include:
• Headline
• Introductory paragraph (5Ws – who, what, when, where and why)
• Picture with a caption
• Facts about the main event
• Third person and past tense
• Quotes written as direct speech
• Conclusion paragraph
Then, we used our knowledge of this to write our very own newspaper reports about the story of ‘Hansel and Gretel’.
In maths, we have focussed on the formal written methods of column addition and column subtraction. We have been adding numbers up to three digits and learning how to exchange or regroup where necessary.
In art, we learnt about the famous Italian artist Giuseppe Arcimboldo who used items such as food and flowers to create portraits. We then made our very own Arcimboldo inspired collages using images of food!
