What a lovely first month we have had in Reception. The children have all settled in so well, getting to know their new routines and making friends. In the first week, we played lots of getting to know each other games such as rolling the ball to our friend and saying their name and pass the smile around the circle. We read the story “Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See?” by Bill Martin Jr and then made our own version using our names such as “Sofia, Sofia, what do you see?” “I see Brodie, looking at me”.
In Maths we have been focusing on numbers to 5; reading and writing the numerals and matching quantities to numbers. We read the story “Ten in the Bed” by Penny Dale to practise counting down from 10 and to practise holding up the right amount of fingers.
In English we learnt the story “We’re Going on a Bear Hunt” by Michael Rosen. We enjoyed acting out the story and then working in groups to create large story maps to represent the events in the book. We used green card for grass, blue paint for the river, real mud for the muddy swamp, lollipop stick trees for the forest and white/silver glitter for the snow storm. The children really enjoyed it.
In Phonics we have been learning the first few sounds; s, a, t, p, i, n. We looked at the sounds each letter made and learnt an action/song to go with it. Now that we know the sounds the letters make we have started to read some simple words such as in, it, as, is, pat, tin etc. The children really enjoy our Phonics lessons and have all shown a great willingness to learn. What a fantastic first month at school!!
