December 2019 in Year 1

This month we have been super busy! The children put on a fantastic performance of “I’m Gonna Shine” and I have been really impressed with the children’s ability to learn all of the songs, actions and dance moves. Thank you to everyone who came to support the children on each of the performances, I’m sure you have been hearing the songs for weeks now so it is lovely that the children were finally able to show you them with the music and costumes in their full glory.

In Maths this month we have continued to work on our mental maths strategies and building our number knowledge. We have been focusing on sequencing and ordering numbers and looking at how numbers are made up e.g. 14 is 10 and 4 more.

In English we have been reading “The Very Hungry Caterpillar”. We looked at the story in detail and then used the life cycle of a ladybird to write our own versions of the book, called “The Very Hungry Ladybird”. We loved thinking about all the things our ladybird would eat and the story enabled us to focus on key skills such as using capital letters and full stops, sequencing days of the week, using plurals and using a storyboard. The children were all really proud of their work and I hope to display these in the new year.

In D&T we learnt how to sew by creating our own Christmas stockings. We designed our creations, chose the colours and then worked really hard to put the aspects together. They turned out really well. I hope the children enjoyed using them over Christmas.

In Science the children have been learning about materials and which materials dissolve. They made a prediction as to which materials would or would not dissolve in water when stirred and then tested these ideas.
